abstract | PURPOSE: To prepare the titled rubber giving a vulcanized product having improved breaking characteristics and processability, by polymerizing 1,3-butadiene in the presence of a catalyst system containing a rare earth element compound, an organo-Al compound and a halogenated Al compound as essential components. n CONSTITUTION: The objective rubber containing 5W50% of polybutadiene is prepared by (1) polymerizing 1,3-butadiene in the presence of a catalyst containing (A) a rare earth element compound (e.g. Nd octanoate), (B) an organo-Al compound of formula I (R 1 WR 3 are 1W8C hydrocarbon group) and (C) a halogenated Al compound of formula II (X is halogen; R 4 is 1W8C hydrocarbon group; n is 1, 1.5, 2 or 3) [e.g. (C 2 H 5 ) 2 AlCl]as essential components to obtain a polybutadiene having an intrinsic viscosity of 5W20dl/g (in toluene at 30°C), and (2) polymerizing isoprene in the presence of the polybutadiene.
