abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain an asymmetric pore size gas permeable membrane having excellent mechanical characteristics and heat resistance at low cost, by using polyetherimide as a base material. n CONSTITUTION: The titled membrane is formed of a mixture consisting of polyetherimide having a recurring unit shown by a formula I and a polymer having a recurring unit shown by a formula II. The asymmetric pore size membrane having such composition is obtained by a method wherein the mixture of the above mentioned polymers is dissolved in a solvent mixture prepared by adding a low b.p. solvent in a chlorine type solvent, an amide type solvent or a cyclic nitrogen-containing solvent as a swelling agent to obtain a solution which is then uniformly cast on a support and, after a part of the solvent is evaporated, the whole is immersed in water to gel the cast layer. By further depositing membrane with a thickness of 1μm or less to the surface of the dense layer of this membrane by the plasma polymerization of a compound having tertiary carbon or an org. silane compound, gas selectivity can be enhanced while maintaining high permeability. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1984,JPO&Japio |
