titleOfInvention Production of novolak epoxy resin
abstract PURPOSE: To produce a novolak epoxy resin of a low chlorine content and excellent storage stability, by treating an allyl-etherified novolak resin with a compound highly reactive with hydroxyl groups, and epoxidizing the product. n CONSTITUTION: An allyl-etherified novolak resin is formed by reacting a novolak resin prepared by condensing phenol, cresol, or the like with formalin in the presence of a catalyst with an allyl halide in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide. The obtained resin is treated with a compound highly reactive with phenolic hydroxyl groups (e.g., acetic anhydride, acetyl chloride, or dimethyl sulfate) to reduce the content of the remaining unreacted phenolic hydroxyl groups of the allyl-etherified novolak resin to about 10% or below, and then epoxidized with an organic peracid (e.g., peracetic acid). n COPYRIGHT: (C)1984,JPO&Japio
