abstract | PURPOSE: To prevent the reduction in yield by the deterioration and increase the concentration, by neutralizing the formed hydrogen chloride as a by-product with an alkali into an alkali chloride in reacting acetaldehyde, etc. with chlorine to give chloroacetaldehyde which is a raw material for medicines. n CONSTITUTION: Acetaldehyde or para-acetaldehyde is reacted with chlorine to prepare chloroacetaldehyde. In the process, the formed hydrogen chloride as a by-product is neutralized with an alkali, preferably sodium hydroxide or calcium hydroxide, to give the alkali chloride, which is then separated by the filtration. The resultant filtrate is then distilled to afford the aimed compound. The molar amount of the alkali is 0.7W1.2times, preferably 0.85W1.0, that of the hydrogen chloride.
