abstract | PURPOSE: The gas-phase reaction between α-picoline, γ-picoline or lutidine, chlorine and anhydrous hydrogen fluoride is effected using a catalyst of a fluoride of Al, Cr, Fe and a diluent to produce the titled compound in a single stage in a short time. n CONSTITUTION: The gas-phase reaction between α-picoline, γ-picoline or lutidiene, chlorine and anhydrous hidrogen fluoride is conducted in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a fluoride of metallic atom such as Al, Cr, Fe, Ni, Mn or co, e.g., AlF 3 , CrF 2 , FeF 2 and a diluent such as carbon tetrachloride or chloroform to produce a trifluoromethylpyridine such as α-trifluoromethylpyridine, γ-trifluoromethylpyridine, bistrifluoromethylpyridine or a trifluoromethylpyridine derived from a pyridine substituted with chlorine atoms on the nucelus carbons.
