titleOfInvention Preparation of 5-methylfurfural
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound which is an intermediate for agricultural chemicals, medicines, perfumes, etc. easily in high yield, by introducing phosgene into a mixture prepared by previously mixing 2-methylfuran with N,N- dimethylformamide, and hydrolyzing the resultant reaction product. n CONSTITUTION: 2-Methylfuran is reacted with N,N-dimethylformamide and phosgene (a condensing agent), and the resultant reaction product is then hydrlyzed to give 5-methylfurfural. In the process, the phosgene is reacted with a mixture obtained by previously mixing the 2-methylfuran with the N,N-dimethylformamide, preferably at 0W85°C, most preferably 10W60°C. The mixing is preferably carried out in an inert solvent, e.g. hexane or benzene. n EFFECT: The side reaction of an immonium salt with the 2-methylfuran can be prevented. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1982,JPO&Japio
