titleOfInvention Preparation of glutaraldehyde
abstract PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a high-quality leather chemical and a disinfectant, in high yield, by oxidizing 1,2-cyclopentanediol obtained easily by the oxidation of cyclopentene with peracetic acid, etc., with air or oxygen using a cobalt compound as a catalyst. n CONSTITUTION: Glutaraldehyde is prepared by oxidizing 1,2-cyclopentanediol with air or oxygen using a cobalt compound such as cobalt chloride, cobalt carboxylate, cobalt acetylacetonate, etc. as a catalyst. The amount of the catalyst is pref. 0.5W 10mol% based on 1,2-cyclopentanediol. The reaction is pref. carried out at 90W 110°C using nitriles, amides or esters as reaction solvent. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1982,JPO&Japio
