abstract PURPOSE: To improve the softness and change of hygroscopic resistance with time of a RFL-treated fiber and to inhibit the deterioration of its adhesiveness with time, by treating a rubber-reinforcing fiber with RFL liquid containing resorcinol resin modified by a phenolic compound. n CONSTITUTION: A phenolic compound represented by the formulaI(wherein X is a hydrogen atom or an o- or p-hydroxyl group), e.g., phenol, catechol, hydroquinone or the like is reacted with formaldehyde and then with a resorcinol compound represented by the formula II (wherein X is a hydrogen atom or a 1W8C alkyl group), to form phenol-resorcinol copolymer resin. The copolymer resin is then mixed with latex, to obtain modified RFL liquid. Its RF component, i.e. the resorcinol-formaldehyde resin, is modified by the phenolic compound, so that the softeness and change of hygroscopic resistance with time of the RFL-treated fiber are improved and that the deterioration of its adhesiveness to rubber with time is inhibited. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1982,JPO&Japio
