abstract | PURPOSE: To obtin easily the titled substance useful as an intermediate for synthesizing a carcinostatic anthracycline derivative, by subjecting a corresponding sulfinyl compound and Zn, Sn, or Al to reductive desulfurization reaction under alkali conditions. n CONSTITUTION: A compound shown by the formulaI(R 1 is H, lower alkyl, benzyl, or acetyl) is reacted with Zn, Sn or Al under alkali conditions to give a compound shown by the formula II. The alkali conditions are reactive conditions in a pH of 7W14, and adjusted by adding NaOH or KOH. The reaction is usually carried out in an organic solvent, e.g., alcohol, ether, aromatic compound, etc., and the temperature is preferably 50W100°C.
