abstract PURPOSE: To provide the titled material having excellent repeating display characteristics, memory characteristics, etc., by using a plurality of viologen derivatives having close color-developing voltages. n CONSTITUTION: At least two compds. having color-developing voltages close within the range of 0.1V or lower, selected from the compds. of formulaIor II (wherein R 1 , R 2 are each alkyl, aryl, aralkyl; X is a monovalent anion; R 3 is bivalent alkyl, aryl, aralkyl), are mixed together to produce the title compsn. The compd. of formulaIcan be obtd. by reacting 4,4'-bipyridine with benzyl bromide in dimethylformamide. The compd. of formula II can be obtd. by reacting 4,4'-bipyridine with benzyl bromide in acetonitrile and then reacting the resulting reaction product, N- monobenzylbipyridinium bromide with 1,4-dibromobutane in dimethylformamide. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1982,JPO&Japio
