abstract NEW MATERIAL:A hydantoin derivative (salt) of formula I [X1 and X2 are H, halogen, lower alkyl or lower alkoxyl; Y is O or S; R1 and R2 are H, lower alkyl or phenyl, R1 and R2 together with C to which they are linked form a ring (however, except when R1 and R2 are H at the same time); n is 0 or 1]. EXAMPLE:6-Fluoro-2-methyl-spiro-(chroman-4,4'-imidazolidine)-2',5'-dione. USE:A treating and preventing agent for various chronic diseases caused by diabetes, e.g. diabetic cataract, diabetic neuropathy or diabetic retinitis. PROCESS:A compound of formula II, e.g. 6-chloro-2-methyl-4-thiochromanone, is reacted with a metallic cyanide, e.g. sodium cyanide, and ammonium carbonate, preferably in an organic solvent, at 50-150 deg.C for 4hr to 4 days.
