abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain a polyester excellent in transparency and color, by reacting terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol in the presence of a specified sulfonic acid compound. n CONSTITUTION: In producing a polyester from terephthalic acid, dicarboxylic acids mainly comprizing the same, or esterifiable derivatives thereof and ethylene glycol or glycols mainly comprizing the same; a sulfonic acid compound of the formula, wherein Ar is an aromatic group, X is an alkyl, Y is H or N(R) 4 , R is H, a lower alkyl or an aryl and m and n are each 1W3, is used in amounts to provide 1/10 3 W 1/10 2 eq. mol of sulfonic acid groups per mol of the acid components constituting the polyester.
