titleOfInvention Preparation of chloroacetaldehyde
abstract PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as an intermediate of pharmaceuticals, etc., in high yield and purity, by reacting vinyl acetate with chlorine gas at a specific temperature in the absence of water, and then mixing the resulted monochlorinated product with a specific amount of water and hydrolyzing at a specific temperature. n CONSTITUTION: Vinyl acetate is reacted with chlorine gas at -10W+30°C (pref. 0W20°C) in the absence of water to obtain monochlorinated product, which is then mixed with 1.3W3pts.wt. (pref. 1.7W2pts.wt.), based on 1pt.wt. of vinyl acetate, of water, and hydrolyzed at 30W60°C (pref. 35W45°C) to obtain the titled compound. The chlorination reaction is carried out by introducing 1.0W1.3 times mole of chlorine into vinyl acetate under stirring (for 5W100hr), and leaving the reaction products at rest for 1W10hr. The hydrolysis is carried out for 5W15hr, and the end point can be determined by the change of the reaction mixture to a clear uniform solution. n EFFECT: Since there is little side reactions, the product can be used without purification to the next reaction. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1982,JPO&Japio
