abstract NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formulaI(R 1 and R 2 are Cl, Br, trifluoromethyl or nitro; R 3 is H, lower alkyl or lower alkenyl; R 4 is H or lower alkyl). n EXAMPLE: 4-[4-(2,4-Dichloroanilino)phenoxy]-2-pentenoic acid. n USE: A herbicide. n PROCESS: A 4-(anilino)phenol compound of formula II is reacted with a 3,4-dihalopentanoic acid derivative of formula III (X is halogen) in the presence of a dehydrohalogenating agent, e.g. an alkali metallic hydroxide or salt of an alkali metal such as K or Na, at 0W150°C, preferably 50W100°C, in a solvent, e.g. acetne, methanol or tetrahydrofuran, for 3W6hr to give the compound of formula°C.
