abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a processing agent for fibers, a processing agent for paper, a gelatinizing agent for water glass, etc. under mild conditions in high yield, by reacting an ethylene glycol with an O 2 -containing gas in the coexistence of an organic acid in the presence of a catalyst such as platinum. n CONSTITUTION: Ethylene glycol or glycolaldehyde-containing ethylene glycol is oxidized with an O 2 -containing gas in the coexistence of an organic acid in the presence of a catalyst wherein platinum and/or palladium are supported on a carrier, at 40W130°C at normal pressure W10kg/cm 2 to give glyoxal. A monobasic acid, dibasic acid, or tribasic acid of an aliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acid, e.g., propionic acid, glutamic acid, benzoic acid, etc. may be cited as the organic acid. The addition of one or more selected from Cd, Cu, and Pd to the above-mentioned catalyst improves further the yield of the desired compound. n USE: A raw material for soil hardening agent, or deodorant and an intermediate for organic syntheses. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1982,JPO&Japio
