abstract NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formulaI a and formulaI b (R 1 is H, OH, alkooxy, or aryloxy; R 2 is H or OH-protecting group; R 3 is substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl; l' is 1 or 2; m and n are 0 or 1). n EXAMPLE: 11-Dodecylthio-10,11-dihydro-6'-methoxy-(8α,9R)-cinchonan-9-ol. n USE: Catalyst for asymmetric reaction. n PROCESS: The compound of formulaI a is obtained by reacting the compound of formula II (e.g. quinine, quinidine, etc.) with the compound of formula III (e.g. methanethiol, ethanethiol, etc.) in the presence of a radial initiation agent (e.g. azobisisobutyronitrile) in an inert atmosphere under heating and stirring at 50W100°C.
