abstract NEW MATERIAL:Compounds of formula I (R is H, lower alkyl, aminium ion of optically active amine; X and Y incorporate to form oxo or one of them is H, the other is hydroxyl or protected hydroxyl; *shows that the carbon marked with* has S-configuration or R-configuration or their mixture in an arbitrary proportion). n EXAMPLE: 4-(o-Carboxylbenzoyloxy)-2-cyclopenten-1-one. n USE: Synthetic intermediate of prostaglandins. n PREPARATION: The reaction of dl-4-hydroxy-2-cyclopentn-1-one of formula II with phthalic anhydride of formula III is conducted in the presence of a base such as pyridine or colidine in a solvent such as carbon tetrachloride at -50W60°C to give the compound of formyla I where R is H, X and Y incorporate to form an oxo group.
