PURPOSE: To improve the yield remarkably with prevented coking in obtaining ethylbenzene from methanol and toluene, by using a catalyst consisting of K, Zn and Cu supported on active carbon or alumina carrier. n CONSTITUTION: Methanol is reacted with toluene in the presence of a catalyst consisting of K, Zn and Cu supported on active carbon or alumina carrier to prepare ethylbenzene. Active carbon is preferred as the carrier, and alumina with reduced acidity is used. The reaction temperature is 350W500°C, preferably 400W450°C. The catalyst is prepared by dissolving or suspending a compound of the component metals in water or acetic acid, dipping the carrier substance in the resultant solution, applying the metallic components to the carrier, drying the carrier, and calcing the resultant dried carrier in an inert gas. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1982,JPO&Japio |
