abstract PURPOSE: A water-swelling, water-stopping material with prolonged shelf stability and enhanced strength useful as a caulking material, a water-stopping material, etc. and prevented from exudation of any water-swelling materials due to immersion in water, which is prepd. by combining a water-swelling material with a rubber by crosslinking using a crosslinking agent. n CONSTITUTION: 100pts.wt. rubber (I) such as natural or styrene-butadiene rubber, 10W500ts.wt. water-swelling material (II) having a hydrophilic polyether bond and an ethylenically unsaturated bond in the molecule and 0.5W10pts.wt. crosslinking agent (III) such as sulfur or an org. peroxide forming an intramolecular crosslinkage are mixed and kneaded, and then crosslinked by heating, to obtain a water-swelling, water-stopping material. It is possible to naturally crosslink the water-stopping material by processing it in the form of an amorphous or putty- like material before crosslinking. An example of the component II is an esterified product obtd. by the condensation of an ethylenically unsaturated acid or its anhydride with a polyether obtd. by the addition of an alkylene oxide with an active hydrogen-contg. compd. having no ethylenically unsaturated bonds. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1982,JPO&Japio
