abstract | PURPOSE: To prepare a mixed ether useful as a solvent, extractant, coolant, aerosol propellant, anesthetic, etc. from low cost raw materials comprising an alcohol, carbon monoxide and hydrogen, in high selectivity, by using a catalyst containing cobalt, ruthenium and iodine as active components. n CONSTITUTION: An ether of formula ROR' (R is 1W5C alkyl; R' is ≥1C alkyl) (e.g. methyl ethyl ether) is prepared from an alcohol of formula ROH (e.g. methanol), carbon monoxide and hydrogen, using a catalyst containing (A) cobalt such as cobalt oxide, cobalt hydroxide, cobalt chloride, etc., (B) ruthenium such as ruthenium oxide, ruthenium hydroxide, ruthenium chloride, etc., and (C) iodine such as elemental iodine, hydrogen iodide, methyl iodide, etc. The atomic ratio of Co/Ru is 10/1W1/10, and the amount of iodine is 0.5W5mg atom per 1 mg atom of Co+Ru. n EFFECT: A valuable mixed ether can be prepared from single low-cost alcohol. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1982,JPO&Japio |
