PURPOSE: To produce titled polymer being low in unreacted monomer content with ease and stability, by reacting a maleic acid with a styrene containing an α-alkyl- substituted styrene as an essential component under reflux of an organic solvent, in the absence of a polymerization catalyst. n CONSTITUTION: (A) A styrene containing an α-alkyl-substituted styrene as an essential component is reacted with (B) a maleic acid in a mol ratio, (A):(B), of 1:1W5, in the absence of a polymerization catalyst. In this reaction, a styrene/maleic acid type low copolymer is produced by carrying out the reaction under reflux of an organic solvent, b.p.≥130°C, which is unreactive with styrene and maleic acid. According to this process, it is possible to obtain a low copolymer having a stable composition and an almost constant softening point and being low in content of unreacted meleic acid and styrene. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1981,JPO&Japio |
