titleOfInvention Preparation of beta-hydroxyalkyl acrylate or beta-hydroxyalkyl methacrylate
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the high quality and high purity titled compound with high selectivity and high catalytic activity in a short period, by the reaction of acrylic or methacrylic acid with an alkylene oxide in the presence of a vanadium compound as catalyst. n CONSTITUTION: Acrylic or methacrylic acid and an alkylene oxide are made to react in a molar ratio of preferably 1:1.0W2.0 at 50W120°C and preferably under higher than atmospheric pressure using a vanadium compound as catalyst, e.g. vanadium tri or tetrachloride, vanadiumoxydi or trichloride, vanadium sulfate (III), vanadyl sulfate (IV), oxidized vanadium acetylacetonate etc., to give the titled compound with high catalytic activity and high selectivity. Since there is no formation of diacrylates or dimethacrylates, the compound is easily purified to give a high purity product. The compound thus obtained is free of discoloration with the catalyst and has a high quality. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1981,JPO&Japio
