abstract NEW MATERIAL:The titled compound of formula I (R is 1W6C alkyl). n EXAMPLE: 2-Hydroxy-5-pentyltetrahydrofuran. n USE: Flavor and pefume: they have durable smells and are used in wide fields of food, beverage, cosmetics, medicine, sanitary and health products and are used as a perfume, flavor or modifier. Characteristically, they have fresh and sweet green note. n PREPARATION: A novel compound, 4-hydroxy-1,1-polymethylenedioxyalkane of formula II (n is 2, 3) is hydrolyzed in the presence of a catalyst such as sulfuric or p-toluenesulfonic acid, preferably in the presence of water in an organic solvent such as diethyl ether, dimethylformamide at 10W50°C for 1W25hr to give the compound of formula I. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1981,JPO&Japio
