titleOfInvention Preparation of cinnamic acid ester
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound, useful as a raw material of perfumes, in high yield at a high reaction rate, by the reaction of a styrene compound with an aliphatic alcohol, CO and O 2 in the presence of Pd, halogen and a dehydrating agent. n CONSTITUTION: A styrene compound of formula I (R 1 is H, halogen, 1W4C alkyl, or 1W4C alkoxy; R 2 is H or 1W6C alkyl) is made to react with a 1W4C aliphatic alcohol, CO and O 2 at 50W150°C in the presence of Pd such as metallic Pd, an inorganic salt of divalent Pd etc., halogen such as alkali or alkaline earth metal halide, and a dehydrating agent such as an orthoester of carboxylic acid, to give a cinnamic acid ester of fcormula II (R 3 is 1W4C alkyl). Lower CO partical pressure gives higher selectivity of the objective compound. Thus the CO partial pressure is preferably atmospheric to 50kg/cm 2 , and O 2 partial pressure is arbitrarily selected outside of the explosion limit. Copresence of 0.1W100mol of a redox agent to 1g atom of Pd can increase the activity of catalysts. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1981,JPO&Japio
