PURPOSE: To prepare a phenoxycarboxylic acid derivative useful as agricultural chemicals in high yield efficiently, by reacting a substituted phenol with a phenyl halide in the presence of a base and at least one type of polar solvent. n CONSTITUTION: A substituted phenol of formula I [R is -CH(R 1 )COOR 2 , -CH(R 1 ) CH 2 CH 2 COOR 2 , -CH 2 C(R 1 )=CHCOOR 2 or -CH(R 1 )CH=CHCOOR 2 ; R 1 and R 2 are Hs or lower alkyls] is reacted with a phenyl halide of formula II (R 3 and R 4 are Hs, OHs, lower alkyls, NO 2 s, CNs, halogens or CF 3 s; X is halogen) in a polar solvent, e.g. an alcohol or aprotic polar solvent, in the presence of a base, preferably an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, a hydroxide or carbonate thereof, to give a phenoxycarboxylic acid derivative of formula III efficiently. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1981,JPO&Japio |
