abstract | NEW MATERIAL:A 6-substituted -1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene-2-carbonitrile of formula I (R is 3W10C alkyl or alkoxyl). n EXAMPLE: 6-Pentyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene-2-carbonitrile. n USE: An additive for liquid crystal, capable of converting a liquid crystal mixture having a negative or small dielectric anisotropy into a liquid crystal mixture having a considerably large positive dielectric anisotropy on addition thereto. n PROCESS: A 6-substituted-naphthalene-2-carboxylic acid of formula II is reduced with Na in isoamyl alcohol to give a compound of formula III, which is then reacted with SOCl 2 to afford an acid chloride of formula IV. The resultant acid chloride is reacted with ammonia to give an acid amide of formula V, which is refluxed with SOCl 2 to afford the compound of formula I. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1981,JPO&Japio |
