abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the titled composition useful as a drug having sadative, muscle relaxant, and hypnotic action, etc. by reacting a 1-unsubstituted-1,4-benzodiazepine-2-one with a lower alkylvinylsulfone. n CONSTITUTION: A 1-unsubstituted-1,4-benzodiazepin-2-one, e.g., a bensodiazepine derivative shown by the formula I (R 1 is H, halogen, nitro, etc.; R 2 and R 3 are H, halogen, or lower alkyl) is reacted with a lower alkylvinysulfone shown by the formula II (R 4 is lower alkyl) in a solvent, e.g., methanol, preferably in the presence of a catalyst, e.g., sodium methylate at room temperatures or under heating to give a 1-(β-lower alkylsulfonylethyl)-1,4-benzodiazepin-2-one, e.g., a 1-substituted benzodiazepine derivative shown by the formula III. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1981,JPO&Japio
