titleOfInvention Production of 1,5-dimethyl-6,8-dioxabicyclo 3.2.1 octane
abstract PURPOSE: 2-Hydroxy-2,6-dimethyl-heptanal is reduced and the product is oxidized to produce readily the titled compound used as an agricultural chemical because it is an insect-attracting pheromone. n CONSTITUTION: The reduction of optically active or racemic 2-hydroxy-2,6-dimethyl-6-heptanal with lithiumaluminum hydride gives optically active or racemic 2,6-dimethyl-6-heptene-1,2-diol. The product is oxidized with ozone or the like to form optically active or racemic 1,5-dimethyl-6,8-dioxabicyclo[3.2.1]octane(generic name: Frontalin). Both reactions are carried out in an appropriate solvent at a temperature lower than the boiling point of the solvent respectively. The resultant Frontalin is a pheromone attracting several kinds of insects and used as an agricultural chemical by gathering insects to a certain place and killing them. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1981,JPO&Japio
