abstract NEW MATERIAL:A 4-oxoproline derivative of formula I (R 1 is H, lower alkanoyl, or benzoyl; R 2 is H or lower alkyl; R is H or lower alkyl), and when R is H, a nontoxic salt of the acid. n EXAMPLE: (2S)-1-[3-Acetylthio-2(RS)-methylpropanoyl]-4-oxoproline. n USE: Hypotensor for oral or nonoral administration, having angiotensinase-inhibiting activity. n PROCESS: A compound of formula I wherein R 1 is lower alkanoyl or benzoyl, i.e. a compound of formula III, is prepared e.g. by reacting a compound of formula II (R 3 is lower alkanoyl or benzoyl) in the presence of an oxidizing agent such as chromic anhydride.
