abstract NEW MATERIAL:A 2,5-dimethyl-3,4-dioxohexanediacid dialkyl ester shown by the formula (R is alkyl). n EXAMPLE: 2,5-Dimethyl-3,4-dioxohexanediacid diethyl ester. n USE: Having an aroma like strong fruits, useful as an intermediate for synthesizing 2, 5-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-2H-furan-3-one capable of being used in a wide range of flavors, e.g., drink, food, etc. n PROCESS: About 2mol propionic ester is condensed with about 1mol oxalic diester, to give a compound shown by the formula. The condensation reaction is carried out by adding the above-mentioned two components of raw materials to an ether type solution containing a strongly basic alkali metal compound, with complete stirring under substantially anhydrous conditions, preferably in an atmosphere of inert gas, e.g., nitrogen gas. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1981,JPO&Japio
