abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance, useful as an aromatic substance and a synthetic intermediate for methyl ester of cis-jasmonic acid, in one step, by specific treatment of a 2-substituted-3-oxo-cyclopentylmalonic acid ester. n CONSTITUTION: A 2-substituted-3-oxo-cyclopentylmalonic acid ester of formula I (R is 3W6 C alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl; R' is lower alkyl, e.g. methyl, ethyl, etc.) is heated at 100W300°C together with an organic carboxylic acid (e.g. n-caproic acid) in a molar amount of 1.0 time or more that of the above malonic acid ester to give a 2-substituted-3-oxo-cyclopentylacetic acid ester of formula II (e.g. methyl 2-n- pentyl-3-oxo-cyclopentylacetate).
