PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an agricultural chemical, etc. free from by-products in good selectivity and yield, by reacting a halonitrobenzene with an alkali metal compound in a polar organic solvent in the presence of both nitrite ion and a metal copper or a copper compound. n CONSTITUTION: A compound shown by the formula I [X is halogen; R is H, 1W10C branched chain alkyl, R'O-(R' is 1W10C branched chain hydrocarbon), etc.; n is 1W2; m is 1W4, and when m is ≥2, R is the same or different] is reacted with an alkali metal compound (e.g., Na 2 CO 3 , K 2 CO 3 , Li 2 CO 3 , etc.) in a polar organic solvent (e.g., sulfolane, DMS, N,N-DMF, etc.) in the presence of nitrite ion, to give the titled compound shown by the formula II. In the reaction, besides the alkali metal compound, a metal copper or copper compound (e.g., cuprous chloride, cupric chloride, etc.) is added to the reaction system.
