titleOfInvention Manufacture of radiation-bridged polyolefin
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain a radiation-bridged polyolefin having a high gel fraction, a small heat deformation rate, and excellent heat resistance, by subjecting an ethylene- alpha-olefin copolymer obtained in the presence of a specific catalyst in a gaseous phase to the irradiation of a radiation. n CONSTITUTION: Ethylene and a C 3 WC 12 alpha-olefin are copolymerized in the presence of a catalyst composed of a solid substance containing Mg and Ti or V (e.g., MgO-RX-TiCl 4 , wherein R is an organic group and X is a halogen) and an organo-Al compound (e.g., triethylaluminium) in a gaseous phase without solvent in order to obtain an ethylene-alpha-olefin copolymer having a density of 0.890W0.945 and a melt index of 0.01W5. Then, the copolymer thus obtained is subjected to the irradiation of a radiation to manufacture a bridged polyolefin. The bridged polyolefin obtained by this method is excellent in mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties, in contrast with the conventional bridged PE obtained by exposing low-density PE manufactured by the conventional high-pressure method to the irradiation of a radiation, having defects, such as limitation to processing speed and low heat resistance. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1981,JPO&Japio
