titleOfInvention Production of 4-dimethylaminostilbene
abstract PURPOSE: The condensation reaction between a phenylacetic ester and p-dimethyl- aminobenzaldehyde, both of which are readily available, in the presence of a catalyst enables the direct formation of the titled compound used as a photosensitizer with simple operations and equipment. n CONSTITUTION: A phenylacetic ester of formula I (R is methyl, ethyl or propyl) and p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde are heated in the presence of a catalyst such as ethylamine or pyridine to effect their condensation reaction to form the titled compound of formula III. The reaction temperature is preferably about 120°C. Since the compound of fomula III crystallizes out on cooling after the reaction, the crystals are filtered and purified according to usual methods to give high-purity titled compound readily. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1981,JPO&Japio
