titleOfInvention Preparation of substituted phenol
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain a substituted phenol useful as an agricultural chemical or a raw material for agricultural chemicals, etc., by the reaction of a dihydroxybenzene in excess of the stoichiometric amount with an organic halide in the presence of a base and a stabilizer. n CONSTITUTION: A compound expressed by formula I (R is H, halogen or a lower alkyl) in an excess of the stoichiometric amount, preferably 1.3 times, more preferably 1.6 times, is reacted with a compound expressed by the formula Ar-X[Ar is formulas II-IV, etc. (X 1 WX 3 are H, halogen, CN or NO 2 and X is additionally CF 3 , acyl, alkylsulfonyl or ester); X is halogen] in the presence of a stabilizer, e.g. a base like an alkali (earth) metal, their hydroxide or an alcoholate, an inert gas or a reducing agent, to suppress the formation of a diphenoxy derivative as a by-product, and give a compound expressed by formula V in high purity and yield. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1981,JPO&Japio
