abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound in high yield, by the air oxidation of pseudocumene in the liquid phase in the batchwise reaction according to the specified absorption of oxygen at a relatively low temperature in the first stage, and in the continuous completely mixing reaction at higher temperatures in the second stage. n CONSTITUTION: One mole of of pseudocumene is oxidized with air in the liquid phase, by the batchwise reaction in the oxygen absorption of 2.8mol or more at 110W170°C in the first stage and by the continuous completely mixing reaction at 180W240°C, more preferably at 195W225°C in the second stage, in the presence of cobalt, manganese and bromine as a catalyst, in acetic acid, to give trimellitic acid. n EFFECT: The final yield is increased to 80W88%, the catalyst may be readily recoverable.
