PURPOSE: To provide a high safety blood substitute containing, as an oxygen carrier, a compound having an oxygen-affinity comparable to hemoglobin and sufficiently long life in the blood vessels, and obtained by bonding hemoglobin with a specific polymer. n CONSTITUTION: An addition product of hemoglobin and polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol or a copolymer of ethylene glycol and propylene glycol, is used as an oxygen-carrier. The addition reaction is carried out, e.g. by the direct bonding in the presence of a condensing agent such as cyanogen bromide, or by the use of a chemical bonding agent such as cyanuric chloride. The amount of the polymer is 4W150 molecules per 1 molecule of hemoglobin. The life in the blood vessels of the oxygen-carrier thus obtained is 2W4 times that of hemoglobin. The carrier is not converted to the antigen in the blood vessel, and is truly preferable as a safe substitute of blood. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1981,JPO&Japio |
