titleOfInvention Preparation of polytetramethylene glycol
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound each having a molecular weight in a wide range advantageously, by the polymerization of tetrahydrofuran in the presence of a catalyst containing boron trifluoride, etc., and an ethereal complex of hydrogen borofluoride, and then the hydrolysis of the resultant compound. n CONSTITUTION: Tetrahydrofuran is polymerized in the presence of a catalyst in the combination of (A) a compound selected from boron trifluoride and its ethereal complex, and one or more compounds selected from (B) an ethereal complex of hydrogen borofluoride and, if necessary, (C) a carboxylic acid anhydride. The resultant polymer is then hydrolyzed by a well-known method, to give the titled compound, useful as a raw material for polyether urethane elastomers of superior cutting resistance, and each having a relatively low to a relatively high molecular weight in a high catalytic activity, simply, readily and economically. The addition of the component (C) permits further improvement in the catalytic activity and ready adjustment of molecular weight. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1981,JPO&Japio
