abstract | PURPOSE: To prepare dimethylbenzaldehyde useful as a raw material or trimellitic acid, selectively, by the formylation of xylene mixture supplied in high quantity at a low cost in the presence of hydrogen fluoride-boron trifluoride containing specific amount of boron trifluoride. n CONSTITUTION: A xylene mixture containing m-xylene and o-xylene is formylated with CO in the presence of hydrogen fluoride-bron trifluoride to obtain 2,4-dimethyl- benzaldehyde and 3,4-dimethylbenzaldehyde. The amount of boron trifluoride is ≤1.5mol pref. 1.2W0.3mol/1mol of the sum of the m-xylene and p-xylene in the supplied xylene mixture. Since the ethylbenzene and p-xylene existing in the xylene mixture are not formylated, the product is valuable as a raw material of trimellitic acid. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1981,JPO&Japio |
