titleOfInvention Manufacture of carbon fiber
abstract PURPOSE: To manufacture carbon fibers of good quality in high yield without causing broken fibers, by increasing the softerning point of a modified mixture of pitch, heavy oils, etc., and a softening point improver, by making the fibers spun from the mixture infusible, and by calcining the fibers. n CONSTITUTION: Commercial coal or petroleum pitch and heavy oil are incorporated with 0.2W10wt% of a softening point improver, e.g. a nitro compound, quinone, or polycarboxylic acid anhydride, preferably dinitrobenzene, and heated at 150W350°C for 0.1W2hr. The modified mixture is then spun, made infusible and calcined to give the desired carbon fibers. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1980,JPO&Japio
