abstract PURPOSE: To obtain CNA(2-cyano-4-nitroaniline) useful as an intermediate for dyes, inexpensively and in high yield, by purification of CNA comprising impurities through heat treatment with n-butanol, aqueous pyridine, etc. n CONSTITUTION: 5g of crude CNA comprising 2-cyano-6-nitroaniline and the like, for example, of 98.5% purity, having the mp(melting point) of 203W208°C, and 50g of n-butanol, for examle, in an amount of 1W20 times that of the crude CNA, are heat-treated in a 100ml flask with reflux and stirring for 30minW3hr, e.g. 1hr, at 70°C or above, preferably reflux temperature and then cooled to 35°C, to obtain the crystals of the purified CNA.
