titleOfInvention Viscosity control of high polymer solution with light irradiation
abstract PURPOSE: To change the viscosity reversibly in a short time, by simple light irradiation of a solution of a high polymer having azobenzene units incorporated into the main chain. n CONSTITUTION: A solution of a high polymer having azobenzene units in the main chain which are subject to cis-trans isomerization with light irradiation, e.g. a condensate of P-diaminoazobenzene with pyromellitic anhydride, is irradiated with visible or ultraviolet light of specific wavelengths to initiate the isomerization. The isomerization of the trans to the cis forms decreases the viscosity, and vice versa. n EFFECT: The time required for the change in viscosity can be adjusted by the exposure to light. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1980,JPO&Japio
