abstract PURPOSE: To prepare a new vinylphenol-type polymer useful for ion exchange resins, etc. and having lactone rings capable of opening and closing reversibly according to pH, by polymerizing a lactone group-containing vinylphenol derivative alone or together with comonomers. n CONSTITUTION: A lactone group-containing vinykphenol derivative I (R is H or alkyl) is polymerized alone or together with the other comonomers (e.g. styrene, etc.) in the radical, cationic or thermal polymerization method, etc. to give a polymer II (D is comonomer; m is positive integer; n is o or positive integer). The polymer II can be also obtained by reacting a vinylphenol-type polymer with a halogenated lactone III (X is halogen). n USE: Ion exchange membranes.
