NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I: (R 1 and R 2 are lower alkyl groups; R 3 is alkyl group; R 4 , R 5 and R 6 are lower alkoxy groups). n EXAMPLE: 7-Ethoxycarbonyl-6, 8-dimethyl-4-formyl-2-(3, 4, 5-trimethoxy-phenyl)- 1-phthalazone. n USE: Drugs for arteriosclerosis, antithrombotics, and antithrombaxanes, useful as an intermediate for the synthesis of 7-ethoxycarbonyl-6, 8-dimethyl-4-(β, β-diacetylvinyl)-2-substituted phenyl-1-phthalazone for the similar applications. n PROCESS: A compound of formula I is oxidized with an agent, e.g. a chromate, N- bromosuccinimide, or manganese dioxide, to give the objective compound of formula I.
