titleOfInvention | Improved method of making naphthalic acid or its anhydride |
abstract | PURPOSE: An acenaphthene is oxidized by a two-step process in which the second oxidation is conducted in a mixture of an aqueous alkali and an organic solvent to produce said naphthalic acid or its anhydride useful as intermediate of dyes and pigments in high yield and purity. n CONSTITUTION: Acenaphthene or an acenaphthene derivative sustituted with proups other than hydroxyl and amino groups is oxidized with a molecular oxygen- containing gas or nitric acid and the resulting product is further oxidized with a hypohalous salt or a molecular oxygen-containing gas, wherein the second step oxidation is conducted in a mixture of sufficient amount of an aqueous alkali to dissolve the stoichiometric amount of naphthalic acid and 0.1W800, preferably 1W 80vol% of an organic solvent to improve greatly the efficiency of the second step oxidation, thus giving high-purity naphthalic acid or its anhydride in high yield for a short reaction time. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1980,JPO&Japio |
