NEW MATERIAL:A benzyl alcohol derivative of formula I or its acid addition salt (R is OH, benzyloxy, halogen, or 1W4C alkoxy; ring A is monomethoxyphenyl, dimethoxyphenyl, trimethoxyphenyl, or 3,4-dimethylene dioxyphenyl). n EXAMPLE: α-[ ( α-Methyl-3,4-dimethoxyphenetylamino ) methyl ]-2-hydroxybenzyl alcohol. n USE: Blood sugar level depressing agent, and blood platelet coagulation suppressing agent, free from heart-contracting side effecti, and having low acute toxicity. n PROCESS: A compound II (R' is R other than OH) or its hydrate is reacted with a compound III to afford a compound IV, which is reduced to obtain a compound V.
