abstract NEW MATERIAL:Trans-3,4-Epoxy-thujane of formula I. n USE: Perfume constituents for dentifrice, food and drink, particularly an intermediate for the synthesis of trans-sabinene hydrate useful as an enhancer of Japanese mint of the peppermint and spearmint types. n PROCESS: α-Thujene of formula 5 is oxidized with oxygen in the presence of an α- diketone, e.g. benzile, as a photosensitizer to give the objective compound of formula I, which is reduced with an agent, e.g. LiAlH 4 , to form trans-sabinen hydrate of formula 4, an enhancer, in a relatively high yield by simple procedures. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1980,JPO&Japio
