titleOfInvention Esterification
abstract PURPOSE: To manufacture high-quality polyethylene terephthalate free from any variation of the quality among each batch, by carrying out the esterification in the presence of bis-β-hydroxyethyl terephthalate (BHET) using a specific vertical type mixing reactor. n CONSTITUTION: For the title esterification, a vertical type mixing reactor with an inner diameter ≥1m (pref. 1.5W3m) is used. With this reactor, a slurry consisting of 1mol of ferephthalic acid (TA) and 1.05W1.6mol of ethylene glycol (EG) are subjected to esterification to start up the reaction and the resulting BHET (or its oligomer) is supplied for the next reaction where a TA-EG slurry of the same composition as said slurry is fed in the presence of the BHET produced above to perform esterification. Thus, each subsequent batch can be subjected to efficient reaction, leading to a high-quality polyester. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1980,JPO&Japio
