abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain a polyester having improved whiteness, titanium dioxide dispersibility, and a low diethylene glycol content, by direct polymerization in the presence of specific amounts of a phosphorus, a cobalt, and an antimony compounds. n CONSTITUTION: (A) An acid component consisting mainly of terephthalic acid containing 10W1000ppm of 4-carboxybenzaldehyde (FBA) is esterified with (B) a glycol component consisting mainly of ethylene glycol to give an ester, which is incorporated with a phosphorus compound, e.g. phosphoric acid, in an amount expressed by formulas I and II: [P and Co are the amounts of the P and Co atoms (ppm); Sb is the amount of the Sb atom (ppm)]. A cobalt compound, e.g. cobalt acetate, and an antimony compound, e.g. antimony trioxide, in amounts of formulas I, II, and III: [FBA is the amount of FBA (ppm)] are added to the ester within 2W15min after the addition of the phosphorus compound.
