titleOfInvention Asymmetric hydrogenation of alpha-keto-acid ester
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the title substance, e.g. an optically active lactate, useful as a raw material for medicines with a high degree of asymmetry, by hydrogenating an α-Keto-acid ester in the presence of a modified solid catalyst, which is readily prepared and handled. n CONSTITUTION: An α-keto-acid ester is hydrogenated asymmetrically in the presence a modified platinum-carbon catalyst, which is prepared by dissolving quinine (-), quinidine (+), or cinchonine in THF, etc., and by immersing the platinum- carbon catalyst in the 0.5W3% solution thus obtained for several hours to adsorb the alkaloid fully, in a solvent, e.g. an alcohol under a hydrogen pressure of several to 100atm. The small amount of the same cinchona-alkaloid used for modification in the solvent improves the degree of asymmetry. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1980,JPO&Japio
